Whoah there BBSer! What in the world is going on? Every time you hit a key at the Armageddon BBS main menu or at the transfer menu, does it seem as if nothing happens, or as if things seem to zip off of the top of your screen so fast that you don't even get a chance to read them? If so, then hopefully, this tutorial will assist you in fixing your problem.
What Causes the Problem?
There are a number of things which can contribute to the flipping screen problem. For example, consider the following:
• You don't have screen pauses turned on in your BBS settings.
• You have your BBS screen size set to 80 columns x 48 rows -- as suggested when you first joined the Armageddon BBS -- but you only have your telnet client or terminal window set to open to the standard 80 columns by 24 columns.
• You are using a mobile device which doesn't really handle the telnet protocol properly, and it is resulting in some kind of distortion.
• Your computer's monitor isn't large enough to acommodate the screen size you set in your BBS defaults.
If your problem only concerns screen size, then perhaps we can resolve it easily.
How to Fix Those Flipping Screens
When you joined the Armageddon BBS, you were asked a series of questions in order to adjust your initial BBS settings. One of these dealt with which screen size to use. While 80 x 24 is the standard size -- meaning a total of 80 columns in width, and 24 rows in height -- in brackets, I suggested that you set your screen height to 48 rows instead, in order to hopefully avoid the probem which you are now experiencing.
The thing is, if you set your screen size to 80 x 48 on the BBS, but your computer monitor is not large enough to acommodate that size, then because you set your screen size settings to 80 x 48 when you joined my board, that is how the BBS will send the data to you. It will send 48 rows of data at a time before it sends a screen pause.
Furthermore, even if your computer monitor is large enough, if you set your BBS screen size to 80 x 48, but then didn't adjust your terminal or telnet client window to that same size, this may indeed result in things just zipping off the top of your screen before you have had a chance to read them.
In short, the size of your terminal or telnet client's window must match whatever size you set on the Armageddon BBS. Both must be open to 80 x 48.
You can easily adjust your BBS screen size -- as well as a number of other BBS settings -- simply by typing the letter "
d" at the Main Menu in order to access the "
Defaults Menu". The screen size option is number "
1" on the menu.
Equally important, make sure that you set "
Pause on screen" on the Defaults Menu to "
Yes". It is number "
3" on that menu.
I hope that this short tutorial resolves your issues for you. Please just don't let the flipping screens flip your gourd! If you still require help after reading this guide, please post a message in the "
I Need Some Help" message conference on the BBS, and I will try to assist you just as soon as I discover your message.
Happy BBSing, and thanks for stopping by!
