If you have a terminal program installed, like the macOS Terminal app, click on the above image to telnet to the Armageddon BBS. Clicking on the above image should result in your terminal/telnet client being launched/started on your computer, if everything is set up properly on your end. This is normal behavior, so don't be alarmed when your terminal/client runs.

Hello there. If you require assistance with using the various commands on the Armageddon BBS main menu, you have come to the right place. To make it easy for you, this tutorial is laid out exactly as you find the commands on the actual Main Menu of the Armageddon BBS, as seen in the above image.

Top Left Section

A = Allows you to review the Auto Message. This is one of the messages you see when you first log on to the BBS. Currently, this is set so that only the SysOp can change it, in case he has an important BBS announcement to share with BBS visitors.

B = Displays a list of currently known telnet-accessible BBSes. It is a sad day for Macintosh BBSing, folks!

C = Puts you in the public Chat Room. You can send messages to other users, page the Sysop, request a private chat with other users and block messages from other users. Type a "?" to see all of the chat commands.

D = Lets you adjust some of your settings, such as your screen size, ANSI or text menus, password, color selections, signature, screen pauses, and the message conferences you want included in a Newscan.

E = Lets you send mail to other users on this same BBS. Netmail is not enabled on this BBS. The BBS will ask for the name or number of the person you want to send mail to, and then will ask for the title of the message before putting you in the text editor to enter the text. You can access your personal Address Book by typing a "!", and you can add a name to your Address Book by putting a "!" character at the beginning of the name when sending E-Mail.

F = Enables you to send private feedback to the WordWeaver regarding any board issues you may be having.

G = Takes you to our online library where you can read different text files which will assist you in using the Armageddon BBS. You can select a library section, and then read an individual file by typing its number.

I = Displays brief information regarding the Armageddon BBS, as well as our BBS Rules.

M = Lets you read any private mail which is addressed to you.

O = Logs you off of the Armageddon BBS.

S = If used during "Sysop Available" hours, an alert is sounded to attract my attention. If I am not too busy, I may choose to chat with you. During other hours, you will be given the opportunity to leave me feedback.

T = Takes you to the Armageddon File Transfer Menu where you can search, list, upload and download files.

U = Displays a list of all current members of the Armageddon BBS.

W = Displays which members are currently on the BBS, and allows you to enter the Chat Room and invite any of them in.

Y = Displays information regarding your BBS account.

L = Lists members who have logged on to the Armageddon BBS today.

Control O = Displays the Main Menu help menu, which is the same information that you find on this current web page.

Spacebar = Aborts a text listing. If you are using a DSL line or cable modem, text may continue to be displayed until the modem's buffer has been emptied.

Bottom Left Section

Control T = This displays the current time, the time you have been on the BBS, and your time remaining before forced logoff occurs.

//Upload = This allows you to upload up to a 30k text file for insertion into the next message you type, or the next email that you send. You will be presented with the upload commands to transfer your text.

//Qscan = This allows you to reset your New Message Scan date. The BBS will prompt you to enter the month/day/year. Your New Message Scan will then include all messages posted after midnight of the date entered.

//ResetC = If you have made any changes to the colors displayed, this command will allow you to reset them to the Hermes II default colors.

//Catchup = This resets your New Message Scan to show all messages as having been read. After doing this, no new messages will show up during a Newscan, until newer messages have been posted on the BBS.

Top Right Section

J = Jump to a new message conference. You will be shown a list of available conferences. Type a number to go to that particular conference.

* = List all the messages conferences in the current message area.

# = Type an actual number to go to a specific message conference.

Z = This will quickly read new messages in all of the selected message conferences, but without pausing between the messages.

N = This will scan all message conferences and show each new message. You can select the specific conferences you wish to scan by going to the Defaults Menu, and adjusting your settings there.

Q = This will display all new messages in the current message conference.

R = Read message titles in the current conference. The BBS will first ask you what message number you want to start from, and will then give you the titles of the next 20 messages from the number entered. You can then type the message number you want to read, or type "t" to display the next 20 message titles.

P = Lets you post a message in the conference you are currently in. Please make sure that you are in the appropriate conference number before typing "p" to post your message. I am very organized, and I like to keep each conference on-topic without meandering. Thanks for your consideration!

$ = Allows you to quickly search all of the messages on the BBS for any keyword. You can search the "To", "From" and "Title" fields, as well as the body of text of each message.

K = Allows you to delete email or messages in the current conference, which you previously sent. The BBS will first ask if you want to delete email or messages. If you want to delete messages, it will then show you a list of messages you have posted, and you can then select the message number to delete. If you want to delete email, the BBS will display each piece of mail you have sent, and allow you to read and delete each one.

+ or - = Advance you to the next higher and lower message conference in the current message area. You can also use the "<" and ">" keys to do the very same thing.

@ = Scans all message conferences for messages which are specifically addressed to you.

Other Commands Not On Menu

? = Refreshes the Main Menu.

F = While reading a message with replies, this command will allow you to read each successive reply in the message thread without interruption.

L = While reading a message thread, this command will display previous message(s) in the thread.

Period = Type an actual period -- not the word "period" -- to see games in our Externals menu.

IMPORTANT: Please note that using Qemu does require that you have a compatible ROM file, as well as a retail version of a Classic Mac OS install CD, or else an install CD disk image. Due to legal reasons, I am not able to provide them here. However, Google is your friend, and if you search hard enough, you WILL find that which you seek.

NOTE: After using both Sheepshaver and Qemu, even though it is a little more complicated to set up, I recommend using Qemu over Sheepshaver, because even though Qemu is not as established as SheepShaver, it is a lot more stable. Both my BBS and Hotline server run simultaneously on it.
